Remember Inspector Ghote? Fans of cinema will remember him as the insightful police inspector played by Naseeruddin Shah in A Perfect Murder, the 1988 Merchant-Ivory Indian English movie, also starring stellar actors such as Madhur Jaffrey, Ratna Pathak Shah, Amjad Khan and Annu Kapoor.
Fans of books and reading will remember him as the astute detective of the series of 25 books by HRF Keating, which were all the rage in the eighties.
The Perfect Murder was the first book in the detective series, and featured Ganesh V Ghote as a middle-aged, married inspector in the Mumbai police force. He has a penchant to pursue murder cases relentlessly until he ultimately catches the murderer, though he is often under-estimated by Bombay society. In the pursuit of cracking his cases, he is compelled to spend a lot of time grappling the prevailing bureaucracy.
Now, a whole new generation of viewers will be able to enjoy the intriguing murder mysteries of the Inspector Ghote series of Indian detective novels. Endemol Shine India is in the process of adapting the much-loved books into a multi-part returning series. The series is still in the development and pre-production stages.
All details will emerge after some time, when Endemol Shine India finishes with the casting process and begins with the production work on the series.
