The People v/s Indira Gandhi: Ekta Kapoor’s Indira Show To Focus On Emergency Era
Ekta Kapoor has just announced one of her most ambitious and politically explosive shows yet. Titled The People v/s Indira Gandhi, the show will present a very different view of Indira Gandhi and her reasons for the imposition of the infamous Emergency in the country. The show takes forward the legacy set by stellar Alt Balaji show, The Verdict: State Vs Nanavati. Ekta Kapoor, head honcho of Alt Balaji, has pronounced The People v/s Indira Gandhi as Verdict 2.
However, unlike The Verdict: State Vs Nanavati, the new show centres on one of the most ignominious, shameful and explosive periods in India’s chequered post-Independence history. The source material for the show are two well-known works on the Emergency by academic minds – Emergency Retold by journalist and diplomat Kuldip Nayar; and The Case that Shook India: The Verdict That Led to the Emergency, by
Prashant Bhushan.
It will be interesting to see the view presented by the show on the Emergency, inarguably the darkest chapter of Indian politics. Will Mrs Gandhi’s decision be vindicated in the show? Will the lady who served as India’s Prime Minister for almost 16 years be restored to her former glory, the sheen of which has become dull in recent years owing to the cacophony surrounding the Emergency? Lastly, also interesting will be to see who lands the most prominent roles in the show – that of Mrs Gandhi, Jayaprakash Narayan, Sanjay Gandhi, Morarji Desai, George Fernandes and other significant stakeholders.
The People v/s Indira Gandhi will be produced by Alt Balaji and ZEE5, in association with Ding Entertainment’s Tanveer Bookwala. Nimisha Pandey, Dheeman Agarwala and Navneet Behal are attached with the project in various capacities. Ekta Kapoor announced her new project on social media, accompanied with the caption –
