‘The Power of the Dog’ Wins Big at London Critics’ Circle Film Awards

New Zealand-born filmmaker Jane Campion’s western drama film ‘The Power of the Dog’ starring Benedict Cumberbatch had previously won the Best Director award after its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival last year and had thereafter bagged three Golden Globe awards.

The movie was also nominated for seven categories at the 2022 edition of the BAFTA Film Awards. Besides, it was also named as one of the top ten movies of 2021 by the American Film Institute.

And now, ‘The Power of the Dog’ has bagged yet another honor at the recently held 42nd edition of the London Film Critics’ Circle Film Awards.

Out of its eight nominations, the movie has won four major awards for the best film, best director (Jane Campion), best actor (Benedict Cumberbatch), and for the best supporting actor (Kodi Smit-McPhee) categories. The awards ceremony was concluded a few hours back at the May Fair Hotel in London.

Other fine films competing for the best film category alongside ‘The Power of the Dog’ were British comedy-drama movie ‘Belfast’, Japanese road movie ‘Drive My Car’, Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi flick ‘Dune’, Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘Licorice Pizza’, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s psychological drama ‘The Lost Daughter’, and Steven Spielberg’s musical ‘West Side Story’, amongst others.

Directed by Oscar-winner Jane Campion, ‘The Power of the Dog’ is a period western drama movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi Smit-McPhee, amongst others. The film follows the story of two brothers Phil and George Burbank, who are Montana-based wealthy ranchers.

The former portrays himself as raw and brutal while the latter is sensitive and kind-hearted. Things take an interesting turn when a widowed inn owner Rose Gordon and her son enter the brothers’ lives. The film is currently streaming on the Netflix OTT platform.
