Tamil Superstar Suriya’s Soorarai Pottru is the first major film in Tamil to skip its theatrical release and stream online directly. The movie will be premiered on Amazon Prime Video on the 30th of this month. The movie was loosely inspired by the life of Captain GR Gopinath, a retired Army captain, who founded the low-cost airline Air Deccan.
The director claimed to have inspired by Gopinath’s life and by extension his book ‘Simply Fly’. In an interview, Gopinath revealed that he is not watching too much of the song-dance mixes films and he feels films these days are not a realistic portrayal of the India of the day.
Gopinath did not even watch the film as well. “I was told they will fictionalize my book and just draw inspiration from it. They have dramatized it here and there. I am okay as soon as the spirit – ‘Even a village boy can dream’ exist. We were supposed to watch it in a private premiere, but everything has gone haywire now due to the pandemic,” he said.
If Gopinath watches the film in the coming days, it will be his first Tamil film. Suriya who delivered blockbusters early in his career has been struggling over the years. With a direct online release, there are going to be no numbers to gauge the movie’s success but fans are hoping that he will deliver a memorable and enjoyable film to the audience.
