Two content-rich films from Asian Detroit are gearing up to capture the attention of a global audience. The first film, “Vaazhai” (Eng. Plantain tree), directed by Mari Selvaraj, known for his raw and genuine storytelling, has already been released. The second film, “Kottukaali” (Eng. The Adamant Girl), directed by P S Vinoth Raj, who is renowned for his natural and significant themes, will be released today.
“Vaazhai” is anticipated for its unique storytelling style, for which the director has already gained recognition through films like “Karnan,” as well as for the performances by new actors and the overall production quality. It is a biographical children’s drama that is expected to introduce a new pool of young talents to the film industry. The cinematography by Theni Easwar, known for his work in films such as Lijo Jose Pellisery’s “Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam,” and the editing by Suriya Pradhaman are highly anticipated.
The music by Santhosh Narayanan, known for his folklore tunes, is expected to bring forth the essence of the local culture through its vocal rendition. The film is produced by the director, along with Divya Mari Selvaraj, Sajith Sivanandan, and Dhilip Subbarayan. The satellite rights have been acquired by Star Vijay, while the OTT rights have been secured by Disney+Hotstar.
“Kottukali,” produced by Actor Sivakarthikeyan for SK Productions and Kalai Arasu for Little Wave Productions, features Actor Anna Ben in her Tamil debut, along with Actor Soori in pivotal roles. The movie revolves around the character ‘Meena,’ played by Ben, who falls in love with a man from a lower caste. As a result, her family believes she is possessed and casts her out. The film is expected to showcase the orthodox mindset prevailing in local communities, blending humor and drama while focusing on a unique women-centric perspective. The storyline will explore a range of emotions — love, care, courage, anger, and a touch of humor. Both actors have the opportunity to deliver captivating performances as the storyline demands.
The film has received high critical acclaim from the 74th Berlin International Film Festival held on 16th February 2024. The cinematography by B. Saktivel and the editing by Ganesh Siva are expected to add an extra layer of finesse to the film.
