‘The Staircase‘ is one of the most highly anticipated true crime series in the works at prolific production studio, Annapurna TV. Audiences have been waiting for long for the limited series to complete production and arrive on streaming. However, Annapurna TV and ‘The Staircase’ have just sprung a major surprise! The series, which was initially announced by Netflix, has now moved to HBO Max. What’s more, veteran Hollywood actor Harrison Ford was to play the lead protagonist in the Netflix true crime series. The role has now landed in the kitty of versatile actor, Colin Firth.
The Staircase is based on the sensational murder charge against American novelist Michael Peterson, who was accused of murdering his wife Kathleen Peterson in 2001. Ford was to play the role of Michael Peterson in the Netflix series. Colin Firth will now portray the aforementioned character.
The show is to be produced by Annapurna TV. It is based on a 2004 documentary series on the murder case, along with published books that document the case. The documentary streams on Netflix too.
American novelist Michael Peterson, 76, had initially claimed that his wife Kathleen died after falling from stairs. But the police suspected otherwise, and in 2003, Peterson was convicted for the murder of his wife. He was subsequently released in 2017, after he submitted an Alford plea for voluntary manslaughter.
Antonio Campos (The Devil All the Time) and Maggie Cohn (American Crime Story, The Girl Before) have written the screenplay for The Staircase. Campos will also helm six of the eight episodes of the limited series, along with being the co-executive producer of the show.
