Back in December 2020, Netflix had released the riveting first page of the script of the second season of the immensely popular fantasy adventure show ‘The Witcher’. The opening scene described a merchant leading a wagon carrying his daughter and wife. They reach a quiet village where he and his wife are brutally killed by a mysterious entity.
Diehard fans of ‘The Witcher’ might already know that the show is mainly based on the collection of short stories namely ‘The Last Wish’ and ‘Sword of Destiny’ written by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski. However, from the above 1-page script revelation, it could not be certainly stated that from precisely which short story the first episode of the second season has been derived from.
But now, ‘The Witcher’ showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich has revealed through a video shared by Netflix Geeked that the opening of the second season of ‘The Witcher’ has been adapted from the short story ‘A Grain of Truth’. This short story featured a character called Nivellen, who was portrayed as a brutal gang leader. During a robbery, the leader assaulted a young priestess, who cursed him to become a monster. And where there is a monster, there is also our favorite magically enhanced monster hunter ‘The Witcher’.
Showrunner Hissrich further said that Ciri’s character would also be brought into the story and that it’s a story of a father and daughter coming together in a place that doesn’t quite feel safe for them, calling it the perfect kickoff for season two. She also talked about the casting of ‘Game of Thrones’ actor Kristofer Hivju essaying Nevellen’s character.
For the unversed, the first season of the Netflix series ‘The Witcher’ featured the charismatic Henry Cavill as ‘Geralt of Rivia’, who is a professional monster hunter with special powers. His destiny makes him cross paths with Princess Ciri and the sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg as they navigate their way through a corrupt medieval fantasy world called The Continent.
‘The Witcher’ first season started streaming on Netflix from December 2019 and comprised eight episodes. While the much anticipated second season is expected to release on Netflix in December 2021.
