The Woman King was one of the most hyped films at this past Toronto International Film Festival. Triple Crown of Acting winner Viola Davis plays the lead role in the film. The film is made with more emphasis on action and emotion. This week, the film is getting a worldwide theatrical release.
According to the official synopsis, the film is inspired by true events that took place in the Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states in Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. It tells the story of Nanisca, general of the all-female military unit known as the Amazons, and her daughter Nawi, who together fought the French and neighbouring tribes who violated their honor, enslaved their people, and threatened to destroy everything they’ve lived for.
The Woman King is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. Gina is best known for the Netflix action movie The Old Guard. Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, Hero Fiennes Tiffin and John Boyega are the other important leads. There are a lot of controversies about the movie before its upcoming theatrical release. Some people say that this movie shows only women as heroes, while another group says that this movie distorts history. However, it is too early to write off The Woman King because it hasn’t even been released yet.
It is important to remember that, ultimately, The Woman King is a product of entertainment. Hunting a film in the name of history and in the name of race, can never be accepted. If the audience likes it, let them accept it.
The Woman King premieres on Sept. 16, 2022
