With the recent reports regarding major restructuring happening for the DCU, James Gunn the co-chairperson and co-CEO of the rebranded DC Studios has been at the receiving end of anger from fans. One reason for the rage is the uncertain fate of Wonder Woman in the DCU after reports floated that ‘Wonder Woman 3’ has been canceled since it doesn’t go hand in hand with the plans Gunn has for DC’s future. But as per the latest reports, it seems Gunn is not to be blamed for the same!
Then who? Interestingly, the finger points towards the director of the first two ‘Wonder Woman’ films Patty Jenkins who was supposed to direct the third one.
Reportedly, ‘Wonder Woman 3’ was not scrapped by the studios, instead, they wanted a rewrite of the movie so that it complements the multi-year plans that the studio had for the character. As per reports, Jenkin’s script also had character arc problems that reportedly rivaled that of ‘Wonder Woman 1984’. It seems it was Jenkins who decided to walk away due to refusal on her part to rewrite the film, rather than the stories that the ‘big bad’ studio scrapped a female director’s movie outright and put an end to Gadot’s portrayal of the superhero much-loved by fans worldwide.
Another piece of happy news is that the studio is very much interested in keeping Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in the DCU despite WW3 not happening. The star is expected to make appearances and cameos in other projects in The DCU, much like Batman and Superman is making in the to-be-released movies like ‘Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom’ and ‘The Flash’.
Looking at the disaster ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ turned out to be with major issues attributable to the script, it’s no wonder the studio wanted some rewrites before investing millions of dollars in the film. Disappointed at ‘WW84’, fans too have come forward for Gunn’s support, since if the third movie’s script was worse than the disappointing second one, then it’s a better choice to end the solo Wonder Woman movies after two movies.
