Not all films have the same destiny as Maharaja. The audiences may be the same for both theatre and OTT but their expectations are entirely different. They want a sort of holiday like feast in theatres and the same people would want a profound meaning while watching a film on OTT. A very few films like Maharaja are able to satisfy both schools of thought.
A movie like Munjya certainly does not tick both boxes. It was a big deal on the big screens. With a very nominal budget, the movie managed to create unprecedented magic at the ticket counter. People went to watch the movie in loads and it earned more than 130 crores which is a huge deal in cruel times like this, especially if the cast and concept are new.
Sharing the same universe as Stree, the film also benefited from that. But the bottom line is, the OTT review of Munjya is very average. A lot of people are complaining about how mediocre a film like Munjya became such a big success.
It is not at all a surprising thing as a lot of theatrical hits are subject to cruel reviews on OTT. A prominent and recent example is Kalki 2898 AD. Looks like Munjya has joined the same list.
Saw #Munjya on @DisneyPlusHS having missed it in the theatre…to each their own…but I cannot for the life of me see how this film crossed 100 crores especially at a time like now when OTT has grown so much and there are better films which have done much less collections
