These Biggies To Be The First To Make It To Theatres Post-Covid

By Binged Bureau - Jun 30, 2020 @ 06:06 pm

Sooryavanshi -83 -The- FilmPVR Pictures announced today on their official twitter handle that Akshay Kumar’s Sooryavanshi will release on Diwali while Ranveer Singh’s 83 will open on Christmas. PVR Pictures had earlier raised their concern and disappointment regarding movies directly releasing on streaming services and bypassing the traditional theatrical route. After back to back announcements about big star movies releasing directly on OTT platforms this makes for some good news for those who like the overall theatre experience.

Earlier due to the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic and the shutdown of the theatres all over the country the release dates of Rohit Shetty’s Sooryavanshi and Kabir Khan’s 83 were pushed. These two are one of the biggest releases of the year. Now, PVR Pictures has announced new release dates for them – Sooryavanshi will hit the theatres on Diwali 2020 and 83 will open on Christmas 2020.

PVR Cinemas tweeted, “Exciting times ahead.. Gearing up to release Rohit Shetty’s Sooryavanshi on Diwali and Kabir Khan’s 83 on Christmas this 2020!”

Sooryavanshi is the latest in the series of police franchise following Simmba. The story revolves around anti-terror squad chief ACP Veer Sooryavanshi played by Akshay Kumar. Katrina Kaif will play the lady lead opposite Akshay Kumar. The film will also have special appearances by Inspector Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgan) and Inspector Sangram Bhalerao (Ranveer Singh), from the earlier films of Rohit Shetty’s cop franchise.

On the other hand, Kabir Khan’s 83 is the story of how Team India created history by winning the ICC Cricket World Cup for the first time in 1983. Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone will be seen as former captain Kapil Dev and his wife Romi Bhatia. The film’s cast also includes Pankaj Tripathi, Boman Irani, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Harrdy Sandhu and Ammy Virk.

Meanwhile in its initiative ‘First Day First Show ki home delivery’ by Disney+ Hotstar Multiplex movies like Laxmmi Bomb, Bhuj : The Pride of India, Sadak2 : The Road to Love, Dil Bechara, The Big Bull, Khuda Hafiz and Lootcase were announced to be released online, there was much speculation that Sooryavanshi and 83 might get an OTT release due to the indefinite closure of theatres. However, Shibasish Sarkar, Group CEO of Reliance Entertainment, confirmed that the films will release in theatres only.

Kabir Khan, director of 83, confirmed that the makers were offered staggering amounts for releasing the film on OTT platform. However, he said, “83 is a film that has been envisioned and made to be experienced on the big screen and we are ready to wait for things to get normal and then release it in cinemas.” With Sooryavanshi and 83 getting released in cinemas, and not on OTT platforms, its a sigh of relief that the audience will once again be able to have the overall experience of going to the theatres.
