Since March 2020, our world has been facing the worst of times due to the pandemic and the impact has been huge forcing industries to shut, small businesses to close. The entertainment industry has also been hugely impacted as it is not viable to shoot or release films. Global film festivals such as Cannes, TIFF, Sundance and more did not take place physically. Rather created virtual platforms.
Some OTT platforms really upped their game by helping out filmmakers from buying their films from the market so they wouldn’t have to bear extensive loss. Amazon Prime did that in India by releasing ‘Gulabo Sitabo‘, ‘Shakuntala Devi’ for home viewing. Disney+ Hotstar is releasing ‘Dil Bechara’, ‘Sadak 2’, ‘Laxxmi Bomb’, ‘Bhuj’, ‘Khuda Haafiz’ and ‘Lootcase’ on their platform.
The case for these Hollywood releases is different, ‘Tenet’ by Christopher Nolan originally slated for release on 17th July has been pushed to August 12th. Disney’s live action ‘Mulan’ slated for March 27th has also been shifted to August 21st. This constant push back seeing the economic and health aspect worldwide but specifically US we can expect a delay on these films for some good months now.
This will also impact the end of the year releases like –
‘Black Widow’ which was supposed to release on May 1st is now pushed to November 6th.
‘Wonder Woman 1984’ the anticipated follow up to the first part is pushed from August 14th to October 2nd.
‘The French Dispatch’ by Wes Anderson was shifted from a July release to 16th October.
‘A Quiet Place part ||’ which was releasing on March 20th has no updated release date yet.
‘Bill and Ted Face the Music’ was shifted from August 21st to 28th.
‘The King’s Man’ is still slated to release on September 18th.
Jordan Peele produced ‘Candyman’ was shifted from June 12th to September 25th.
Although this situation is difficult, the smart way is to release all these anticipated films only when we’ve passed these uncertain times. It’ll be interesting to see how Warner Brothers, Marvel, Blumhouse and other productions tackle this situation.
Till then, you can head over to our site, browse recommendations, read latest news but most importantly stay at home and enjoy cinema.
