According to a report by intelligence platform, Sensor Tower regional streaming platform is one of the top 10 most downloaded apps worldwide in June. It was ranked at the 9th position while the top three spots were taken by YouTube, Netflix and Amazon Prime – all digital video streaming platforms. Zee5 also snagged the 6th position according for only Google Play downloads out of which 3.95 million downloads for the platform came from India.
Another regional platform that made it to the top 10 list was Hotstar which was the ranked no. 10 in the most downloaded apps on Google Play while Disney+ Hotstar was at no. 8 in the overall most downloaded apps list.
India has contributed immensely to these apps’ popularity by making up 8.3% share of Netflix’s downloads and 29.5% share in Amazon Prime’s downloads. This could be attributed to the ongoing pandemic during which there has been a huge surge in internet traffic of 73% on weekdays and 65% on weekends, according to the report.
This survey has just solidified the notion of streaming platforms gaining full steam and in the future we might just see a list dominated by only video streaming platforms with the way the industry has been on a rise.
