It’s the weekend and it’s time for a Binged recommendation. Our suggestion for the day is ‘Moneyball’ (currently streaming on Netflix), a biographical sports drama starring Brad Pitt in the lead that went on to recieve various accolades including several Academy Award nominations.
Based on the 2003 nonfiction book Moneyball: The Art of Winning An Unfair Game by Micheal Lewis, ‘Moneyball’ is directed by Bennett Miller with a script by Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin with a story by Stan Chevrin.
The original book features an account of how Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland Athletics baseball team assembled a competitive team during the 2002 season.
Coming to the film, Pitt plays the role of manager Beane and along with his assistant general manager Peter Brand (Jonah Hill) builds a team of undervalued talent by taking a sophisticated sabermetric approach to scouting and analysing players all while dealing with franchise’s limited budget for players.
‘Moneyball’ was a box office hit and received widespread critical acclaim, specifically for the incredible performances and amazing screenplay. The film went on to receive six Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor for Pitt, and Best Supporting Actor for Hill.
The film has an 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes with the website consensus praising the director and lead star Pitt for turning a niche subject into a sharp, funny, and touching portrait worthy of baseball lore.
‘Moneyball’ is all worth your time and if you haven’t seen it yet, it’s streaming on Netflix. Do give it a go and you won’t regret it!
