The film released on August 12th after a Sundance Film Festival premiere on January 24th. Emily the Criminal not only earned positive critical reception for the film and Aubrey Plaza’s performance, but was also positively received by audience. The film follows Emily’s life. She is terribly down on her luck and saddled with debt. Emily gets involved in a credit card scam and eventually gets pulled into the criminal underworld of Los Angeles, ultimately leading to deadly consequences. Bankrolled by Vertical Entertainment and Roadside Attractions, Universal Pictures bagged international rights of the film. The film stands at 94% on Rotten Tomatoes with an average rating of 7.6/10. The film is also at a score of 75 out of 100 on Metacritic.
