Batman has officially debuted in James Gunn’s DCU in the latest episode of the ongoing Creature Commandos series, created by Gunn himself. Episode 6 features a surprising cameo from the Dark Knight, who attempts to capture Doctor Phosphorus. The villain begins wreaking havoc and going on a killing spree in Gotham City after taking over Rupert Thorne’s criminal empire. His actions catch the attention of Batman, who crashes his party at the Ice Lounge to apprehend him.
This confirms that Batman is already an established character in the DCU. Gunn also acknowledged his presence in Creature Commandos during a recent interview with Rotten Tomatoes, where he discussed the Caped Crusader’s future in the DCU.
“This is the DCU Batman…[laughs when asked which Batman is it] I gotta tell you, I love him! I’ve loved him since I was a little kid. He’s one of my favourite characters, I have gone on the record in the past when I was at Marvel saying, ‘My favourite character is Batman, I love him.’ We’re going to do great things with him, he’s the most popular superhero in the world and I can’t wait for people to see more of him, along with Superman and together.”
Gunn’s comments suggest that fans may get a new actor for Batman in the DCU, contrary to rumours claiming that Robert Pattinson will reprise his role as Gotham’s protector in the DCU as well, apart from his ‘The Batman’ movies with Matt Reeves.
Batman is already established in the DCU, as confirmed by the latest episode of Creature Commandos. This means fans likely won’t see Batman’s tragic origin story again in upcoming DCU projects. The next Batman is expected to appear in Andy Muschietti’s The Brave and the Bold, which will focus on an already-established Batman and the members of the Bat-family. Skipping the backstory makes sense, given how often it’s been retold.
Gunn’s comments also indicate that Batman will eventually team up with Superman. However, their collaboration will take time, as Superman has yet to arrive in theatres (scheduled for release in July 2025), and The Brave and the Bold has been delayed, as confirmed by Muschietti. Stay tuned for more updates. Meanwhile, you guys can watch Creature Commandos on JioCinema. Enjoy!
