There are some science fiction films that might not be fast paced but are certainly gripping. One such sci-if drama that is probably highly underrated is ‘Moon’ (2009) starring Sam Rockwell in the lead and directed by Duncan Jones in his directorial debut.
Currently available on Prime Video, ‘Moon’ follows Sam Bell who is nearing the completion of his 3-year long contract with Lunar Industries, mining earth’s primary source of energy on the dark side of the moon. Alone with only the base’s vigilant computer Gerry as his sole companion, Bell’s extended isolation has taken its toll. He longs to return home, but a terrible accident on the lunar surface leads to a disturbing discovery.
‘Moon’ had a modest budget and an okayish box office run but it received great critical acclaim. Critics called it a compelling work of science-fiction that is boosted by Rockwell’s poignant performance and a thoughtful direction from Jones.
Despite its slow-burn pace ‘Moon’ is refreshing. It is a film about what it means and takes to be human. Made on a very small budget, given its genre, this film brilliantly explores ideas of identity while staying true to its theme.
If you love space themed films and are looking for something different, ‘Moon’ on Prime Video is the perfect pick for you.
