Amazon Prime Video treasures plenty of action and superhero flicks. But when it comes to romantic comedies, the streaming service fails to offer an abundant number of rom-coms to the viewers. On top of that, finding them on the platform is laborious. They usually show up after scrolling at least 10-15 pages. Yup, it is quite a hassle. But don’t you worry, guys! We have unearthed a beautiful yet underrated rom-com just for all of you. It is none other than The Big Sick (2017).
Helmed by Michael Showalter, The Big Sick benefits hugely from the heart-touching performances of Kumail Nanjiani and Zoe Kazan. You may treat it like all other conventional rom-coms at first. But trust us, this flick has plenty of surprises to offer. One of the surprises is the leading man’s performance. Nanjiani’s prominence skyrocketed after the film’s release. He plays a fictionalised version of himself, a struggling stand-up comedian living in Chicago. He left Pakistan and moved to the US with his family at a young age. He is a devoted son but lies about practising Muslim to his parents (Anupam Kher and Zenobia Shroff). Additionally, he never shows interest in getting into an arranged marriage.
However, his world starts turning upside down after the arrival of Emily (Kazan), an American psychology student, in his life. They begin an unexpected relationship. But Kumail decides not to tell his parents about Emily, petrified that they will disown him. Things become messier after Emily goes into a coma due to a life-threatening disease.
Kumail knows deep in his heart that his relationship with Emily can’t work out. Yet, he gives his everything to win her back. Sometimes, our optimistic efforts and well-intentioned stubbornness make all the difference.
Kazan and the rest of the cast do their job brilliantly in this rom-com. Also, the film proves that the standard rom-com formula still has some fresh angles to explore. It works as a flawless blend of romance, sweetness, silliness, and fun. The supporting cast includes Ray Romano, Holly Hunter, Adeel Akhtar, and many more.
