If you are a fan of Indian regional cinema and are looking for an under-appreciated gem, here is a recommendation for your Sunday watch.
‘Joker’ came out in 2016 and is a Tamil language film. It is a satire by genre and is hilarious but at the same time thought-provoking. The movie is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
‘Joker’ tells the story of Mannar, a villager who poses as the president of India itself and tries to face and solve the many injustices in the village. When Mallinga, a young girl, comes to him demanding a toilet he sets out to solve her problem. Mannar eventually falls in love with Mallinga and they be part of an extraordinary love-story.
The movie is written and directed by Raju Murugan. Murugan is known for films like ‘Cuckoo’, ‘Gypsy’ and the recent hit ‘Japan’. His storytelling is lucid and the movie is extremely well executed. There are actors like Guru Somasundaram, Ramya Pandian and Gayathri Krishnaa in the leading roles. The cinematography is handled by Chezhiyan and the music is given by Sean Roldan.
Small budget Tamil films do not get the appreciation that they deserve in the crowd of many hero-worahipping commercials. Watch ‘Joker’ with your friends and family on Prime Video and enjoy your Sunday.
