On this international women’s day, Netflix is celebrating women in all their forms whether she is a cop, a banker, a stand-up comic, a homemaker, a boss, a pilot, a Bombay Begum, Kanta Bai, Vartika Chaturvedi, Dolly, Kitty or a Bollywood Wife.
On this special occasion, Netflix has announced a new partnership with National Film Development Corporation under which it will support a screenwriting course for 100 women in India as part of the company’s $5 million global fund towards programs that help identify, train up-and-coming women talent around the world.
Whether she is in a sari or in overalls, fabulous, mismatched or in love, Netflix has stories featuring them in every genre, format, mood, tone, character or generation. The streaming giant even went on to play with the word streaming itself and made it ‘stree’-ming.
Netflix with its global presence has often featured such stories by and for women, not just in India but all across the globe. And through the above mentioned initiative, Netflix will provide female story-tellers a platform to tell more unique, beautiful and real stories by, for and about women.
While it’s a welcome move from both Netflix and National Film Development Corporation, such initiatives need to be taken more often and by more platforms and organisations. These steps not only help women to get a platform but also provides them more creative freedom.
