The streaming portals across the world are abuzz with content inspired by stories written by legendary writers like Rabindranath Tagore, Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Ruskin Bond and Sharadindu Bandopadhyay. However, regional content creators seem to be barely excited by the trend of book adaptations.
Apart from the only announcement by Soundarya Rajinikanth about her decision to turn the famous Tamil novel Ponniyin Selvan into a web series on MX Player, there has been no notable interest from filmmakers to dig regional literature for inspiring content.
All South Indian languages including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada, have great storytellers, playwrights and poets who have come with timeless literary marvels across the decades. It’s certainly sad that the entertainment industry is making no effort to experiment with regional literature for web content.
The digital space is known for the freedom it provides and we wonder what’s stopping filmmakers from looking into the history books. The likes of Trivikram, Kamal Haasan and other stars who preach so much about the literary glory of our languages, should ideally get things moving on this front.
