But before that, the Tom Cruise starrer highly anticipated ‘Top Gun’ sequel is headed to the prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2022 which is scheduled to be held from 17th May to 28th May in France. Although there is no news of any official confirmation regarding the Cannes screening of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ by Paramount.
Whether ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ would have its world premiere at Cannes 2022 or the film will make its premiere in San Diego as previously scheduled, is also not officially confirmed as of now.
Cannes Film Festival is known to screen many high-profile Hollywood films before their extensive theatrical release. In 2019, Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ starring Leonardo Di Caprio and Brad Pitt was screened at the fest.
However, interestingly, this will be the first time in three decades since a Tom Cruise film is making its world premiere at Cannes. The last movie starring Tom Cruise that was screened at Cannes was Ron Howard’s Western romantic adventure film ‘Far and Away’ back in the year 1992.
The parent film ‘Top Gun’ was helmed by the late filmmaker Tony Scott (Ridley Scott’s brother) and came out in the year 1986. The film featured Tom Cruise in the role of a daredevil fighter pilot Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, who is enlisted for the Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School where he competes with another brilliant student Iceman (Val Kilmer).
Despite receiving mixed reviews, ‘Top Gun’ has nevertheless achieved a cult following and immense popularity over the years. The film currently holds a 59% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6.9 IMDb rating. ‘Top Gun’ is currently streaming in India on the Netflix and Amazon Prime Video OTT platforms.
The sequel ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is set thirty years after the events of ‘Top Gun’ and Tom Cruise is now a brave test pilot and a flight instructor. He trains a batch of Top Gun graduates for a special mission where he meets pilot trainee Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Miller), who is the son of Maverick’s best friend and former naval flight officer Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw.
