Tom Holland is about to make the switch from superhero to super-dancer on screen. The popular actor who portrays Spider-Man in the Sony Pictures and Marvel universe will soon start work on a biopic film on dancing legend, Fred Astaire. Holland will portray Fred Astaire in the biopic.
The film is still in the pre-production stage, with terms and deals yet to be finalised. Amy Pascal is making the Fred Astaire biopic, under her banner, Pascal Pictures. She has earlier produced films such as Little Women, The Post and Spider-Man: Homecoming under her eponymous company. Sony Pictures is on board as producers of the film.
Tom Holland revealed the news at a promotional event for Spider-Man: No Way Home on Sunday evening. Holland revealed in an interaction with the media, “The script came in a week ago but I haven’t read it yet. They haven’t given it to me. I know Amy Pascal has the script. She Facetimed me earlier when I was in the bath and we had a lovely Facetime. But I will be playing Fred Astaire.”
Fred Astaire is widely agreed upon as the greatest dancer in film history. His fluid dance moves, sense of rhythm and nimble reflexes have remained unparalleled in filmdom. A biopic on the actor, dancer and film is long overdue. This is not the only biopic on Fred Astaire in the works though. Amazon Studio is developing a film on the iconic on-screen dance partnership between Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, titled ‘Fred & Ginger’.
Tom Holland is an apt choice to portray the legendary dancer on screen. His 2017 dance mashup of Gene Kelly’s ‘Singin’ In The Rain’ and Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’ at the Lip Sync Battle will remain etched in the minds of fans forever. And if he can pull off Gene Kelly’s moves, he can certainly make a terrific Fred Astaire on screen.
