Republic Day will be upon us in a few days and it is time to compile a list of patriotic films to watch when January 26th rolls around. Mollywood has made their fair share of patriotic films, not as much in recent years, still a lot of movies nonetheless. For the occasion of our 72nd Republic day, let’s take a look at 7 must watch patriotic Malayalam films to stream during Republic day:
Sainyam
This 1993 multi-starrer follows Indian Air Force officer Group Captain Eashwar and Wing Commander Zakir getting involved in a project called Red Alert. In the meantime, some terrorists attempt to steal the project’s secrets. Check out this old school thriller on Disney+ Hotstar.

Keerthi Chakra
One of the biggest Malayalam hits of the year 2006, Keerthi Chakra went on to spawn three other (lesser known) sequels which will come to be known as the “Major Mahadevan film series”. The movie follows Major Mahadevan and his team posted in Kashmir as they tackle various terrorist groups active in the region. Watch the military action drama on Disney+ Hotstar.

Picket 43
This film follows the unlikely friendship between an Indian soldier and a Pakistani one as they guard a picket (Indian Picket 43). This unlikely friendship however is met with suspicion and disdain from superiors of both sides. Stream this film on MX Player.

1921
This movie is based on the true events of the 1921-1922 Mappila Uprising in the Madras Presidency. Another multi-starrer, the war film follows a bullock cart driver and a revolutionist as they take on the British Raj by joining the brigade of Haji, who was one of the prominent leaders of the uprising. This flick can be streamed on Disney+ Hotstar.

Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja
Another war film, the movie is set during the time when the East Indian company came to conquer India, back in 1796. King Kerala Varma is forced to leave his kingdom of Pazhassi because of the East India Company and seeks refuge in the Wayanad forests. He then uses guerilla warfare strategies against his enemies which eventually earned him the nickname Kerala Simham (Lion of Kerala). This movie is available for streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.

Take Off
The youngest film of this list, the movie follows three Malayalees (nurse Sameera, her husband Shaheed and Indian Ambassador to Iraq Manoj Abraham) as their lives change due to the political unrest happening in Iraq (where they three are staying), and its eventual destabilization. Kaalapani
In 1915, Indian doctor Govardhan is falsely accused of bombing a train and he is sent to a cellular jail (kaalapani) at Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Island, which was occupied by the British at the time. While jailed there, he witnesses the extremely inhumane treatments being handed out to the inmates. This historic drama is currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
