What an episode.
The season finale of the Marvel Superhero series ‘Loki’, titled “For All Time. Always” dropped a few hours ago, in case you didn’t know and we repeat – what an episode. Ending with yet another post-credit scene as expected (which was barely anything by the way), the season finale took this web series to another level and we will talk all about that in another article. This article, like always, is here to talk about the various MCU callbacks and references that were seen throughout this episode. For now, check out the 8 Important Easter Eggs currently featured on this show:
Miss Minutes
We knew that Miss Minutes was hiding something in the previous episodes, but now we finally know who she is actually working for. We still don’t have a clue about her origins and her “current situation”, which we hope will be rectified in the next episode season.
Rebecca Tourminet
Rebecca Tourminet is the actual name of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) character whose variant name is Ravonna Renslayer (Her name was shown in the certificate in the classroom Hunter B-15 was standing in). In the comics, Rebecca Tourminet is the name adopted by Ravonna Renslayer when she went back in time to meet her lover, Kang. She did say that she was looking for free will, which is being controlled by Kang currently. So maybe the Kang-Ravonna relationship could happen in the MCU as well.
Green vs Purple
The lighting in the episode was brilliant. Most of the show focuses on the dynamics between Loki & Sylvie and He Who Remains. These dynamics also includes the lighting under which all three characters are shown, where green and purple are interchanging with each other – each trying to conquer the other. We expect this light dynamics to be a prominent feature, since ‘Loki’ and other MCU projects have used this technique multiple times already.
He Who Remains
He Who Remains is a completely different person in the MCU, compared to the comic books. In the comic books, he is an extremely old man, who is the final director of the Time Variance Authority at the Citadel at the End of Time, the last reality of the Multiverse – all similar to the one portrayed in this episode. Except for one catch – He is the variant of Kang the Conqueror.
The last part isn’t mentioned of course, but the actor who portrays He Who Remains is Jonathan Majors – the same actor who is expected to portray Kang the Conqueror in 2023’s ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’.
Kang The Conqueror
Wow. Jonathan Majors has come early into the MCU. This appearance was unexpected, but a treat nonetheless. We expect Kang to appear in the aforementioned ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ after Sylvie killed He Who Remains and that event created multiple timelines. His backstory remains the same as in the comics – starting out as a 31st century human scientist.
He then discovers the multiverse – which his variants also do at the same time. As some of the Kang variants decide to conquer the multiverse, He Who Remains experimented and weaponized ‘Alioth’ to beat them all and becomes the “last Kang standing”. However, we expect this new Kang variant (who Sylvie created with He Who Remains’ murder) to be the new TVA head and the main MCU villain – which is kinda awesome, Loki accidentally creating the next big MCU villain. The backstory for Kang looks good already.
Ravonna and Mobius / Sylvie and Loki
The dynamics of these characters with each other has changed. Ravonna doesn’t want to destroy the TVA as she believes it stands for something good, but she herself goes looking for freewill. Mobius having seen the truth is not a believer anymore. Mobius is ready to prune Ravonna while she is not willing to do the same anymore.
In the beginning of this episode, Sylvie doesn’t go in guns blazing (so to speak) into the Citadel, and instead wants Loki’s opinion. Loki on the other hand doesn’t have anything to say and is willing to do her way. A nice callback to episode three.
These subtle inner season foreshadowing(s) have become a sure thing in all MCU series – and something to look out for.
Betrayal
Wow. We didn’t see this coming. We all expected Loki and Sylvie to team up and take on whoever was in control of the TVA, but the situation turned out to be much more complex than that. And when Loki stopped Sylvie from initially taking on he Who Remains, we knew Sylvie’s episode 5 premonition was about to come true. But this time, Loki got betrayed – for the first time (since he learnt about his parentage) and that was truly heart-wrenching to watch. We expect this to have an important significance in the future for Loki (and the series) and we can’t wait for the next season to drop already.
The Multiverse
Sylvie killed He Who Remains. This event made the sacred timeline explode into multiple branches – recreating the multiverse. This will now open up new comic storylines and villains – hopefully being one of the main ways for X-Men and Spider-Man characters to crossover to the MCU. We expect the three films ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ to play a huge part in this multiverse storyline before the second season drops. Phase 4 looking much better now.
Extra: “Post Credit Scene”
So season 2 is officially confirmed in the web series (in case you didn’t believe it). Like the previous episodes, this season finale too has ended on a crazy cliffhanger – the first MCU TV series to end in one, by the way. Still with Loki expected to make an appearance in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, we expect there to be some continuity in this movie, before the second season kicks off.
The first season of Loki is currently available for streaming in Hindi and English on Disney+ Hotstar. The first three episodes of the same series are available for viewing in Tamil and Telugu languages as well.
