The thrillers are a genre that easily cut the boundaries. There is no language barrier, and the subtleties are not entirely lost while viewing unlike a drama, romance or comedy. Here we present a list of ten such thrillers which can be enjoyed universally. They are in no particular order.

1. Drishyam (Disney Plus):

There have been a handful of films across the decades, where the originals have been remade in multiple languages. They are more often than not regarded as a classic for ages and loved by one and all. The Mohan Lal starrer Drishyam is one such epic. The thrilling drama about the extent to which a father goes to save his daughter was a critical as well as commercial monster. Director Jeethu Joseph extracted the best from everyone. It is the reason why despite so many remakes, the original stands tall.

2. A Wednesday (Netflix):

Director Neeraj Pandey’s debut, A Wednesday is about the voice of a common man. What happens when he is fed up with the system and decides to take the matter in hands? The thriller reintroduced the stalwarts that Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher are to a younger generation.

3. Johnny Gaddaar (Disney Plus):

Years before, Sriram Raghavan struck gold with Andhadhun, he had already made a cult crime thriller. Johnny Gaddaar is the perfect combination of style and content with a sensational background score. Set in the world of gambling, it is about five business partners who eye a big deal. One of them turns out to be a little greedier than the rest. What happens next is a tale of lies, deceit, money and blood. It offered a template for many movies in its wake.

4. Kaminey (Netflix):

Kaminey is without any doubt Vishal Bharadwaj at his most commercial best, yet. He spins a crime saga involving twin brothers, drugs, police, politicians and mafia and succeeds in holding the interest with thrills all along. The memorable soundtrack is the icing on the cake.

5. Ratsasan (Disney Plus):

The story of a struggling director turned police officer tracking a psycho killer on the loose came out of nowhere, and blew everyone over. It’s phenomenal background score (instantly rings in the mind while writing) and slick making by Ram Kumar won over the thriller movie lovers, crossing the boundaries.

6. Ugly (Amazon Prime):

Anurag Kashyap usually handles politically, and criminally loaded dramas in all its raw glory and colourful language. Here in Ugly, he brings a thriller element to his usual style. This tale of a kidnapped girl is sure to leave everyone shocked and disturbed when it ends.

7. Andhadhun (Netflix):

Thrillers and drama surrounding it in its various forms and perspective have been the calling card of director Sriram Raghavan. Right from his debut, Ek Hasina Thi he has been exploring this space. Andhadhun added further to his reputation, which is why he features twice in the list. The hook line of a fake blind singer witnessing a murder is extraordinary; the casting of Tabu and Ayushmann Khurrana took it to the next level.

8. Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru (Prime):

Karthick Naren burst on to the scene with Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru, and became an overnight talk of the town. The story is about three young men involved in an accident on a rainy night. What happens, in the end, seems simple, but the way he held the attention of the viewers with a gripping screenplay, until the end, is what makes the movie an instant winner.

9. Mumbai Police (Disney Plus):

The Malayalam film industry is known for its thrillers and cop stories. There have been many classics on this count. We pick Mumbai Police for its lead and the unexpected climax. The Rosshan Andrrews directorial was the beginning of sorts for Prithviraj Sukumaran to throw such unpredictable surprises narratively which is now becoming a regular feature in his films.

10. Anukokunda Oka Roju (Amazon Prime):

The only Telugu film on the list is one of its kind of mystery thriller. It comes from Chandrasekhar Yeleti, who is known for unique plots. Anukokunda Oka Roju is the story of missing one day in the life of a chorus singer Sahasra (Charmme). The simple line is narrated most unexpectedly by the director, which is sure to take everyone by surprise.

Note: There are a few other exciting thrillers which we have missed. The primary criterion for the list is the availability on the digital platform so that our readers could watch them.
