Sony Pictures Entertainment has just dropped the trailer of the feature film ‘The Kid Detective’ and as the name suggests, it is about a kid-detective …sort off. The trailer follows a young 13 year old detective, Abe Applebaum who was good at solving kid mysteries. A few seconds, later you see an older version of the detective still stuck solving kid-mysteries.
The line “I was so far ahead of the game, but one day I just woke up behind”, is one of the most relatable lines uttered in the trailer and it is expressed at the very beginning of the teaser. If we ever needed to know what “The Hardy Boys” or “Famous Five” would be like if they grew up, this portrayal of Adam Brody looks like a harsh, yet accurate reality.
Whenever he is not hungover or self-reflecting with pity, at the age of 32, he still solves mysteries, which are brought to him by children. He gets his first ever “adult-case” when a young naive high-school student tells him about the death of her boyfriend, who had been stabbed 17 times. The trailer then goes on to show a montage of him sneaking around, hiding under a bed, hitting kids who disrespect him, etc. while he asks the girl questions about her boyfriend.
The trailer gives off a vibe of a slight noir style, with the lighting and sound; but the trailer makes it seem like a redemption story for a man who has been down in the dumps for too long, while intertwining itself in a murder mystery film. There is an obvious trauma present in the character, a man who never got to fully grow up, on his own terms.
Evan Morgan has written and directed this feature, while Adam Brody stars as the titular character. Sophie Nelisse, Sarah Sutherland and Jesse Noah Gruman round off as the supporting cast. This Rated-R Film is coming to theaters this Friday on October 16th 2020. Watch the trailer for the film down below.
