Trailer Talk: Alan Yang’s Tigertail Comes Across as a Film Steeped in Sentiments and Emotions

Alan Yang’s upcoming Netflix film ‘Tigertail’ has generated massive buzz in OTT circles, and going by the trailer that was released recently by the streaming platform, the film seems absolutely worthy of the buzz.

The trailer displays lovingly shot frames of the movie, starting with the lush green fields of Taiwan, from the childhood of the protagonist, Pin-Jui (Hong-Chi Lee). The young Taiwanese boy leaves behind his childhood love, a sweet Taiwanese girl, to chase the so-called American dream, settling for an arranged marriage of convenience to fulfil imagined aspirations.

The trailer cuts to the present, where a grown up Pin-jui (Tzi Ma) grapples with a listless job, loveless married life and memories of his beloved life before the illusionary American dream shattered his real dreams of love, joy and a happy family life.

Things come to a head when he realises that his past, and the decisions he made, are affecting his present relationship with his daughter Angela (Christine Ko). Moreover, Angela is as headstrong as he is. The scenes that depict the two actors together as father and daughter are easily the best in the 2-minute trailer. The underlying emotions in each beautifully designed shot tug at your heart, leaving behind a satisfying warmth in its depths.

That the film, his directorial debut, is a closely personal one for Alan Yang is quite clear from the snatches of it we see in the trailer. He even posted a poignant message on Twitter while introducing the trailer to audiences. He wrote, “Please share (this trailer) with anyone who needs an escape for two minutes today, especially Asian-Americans, who are facing an unprecedented time in our history. This film is a love letter to my family and all of the Asian immigrants out there.”

Alan Yang has executive produced ‘Little America’ on Apple TV+, a highly-appreciated anthology series which also touches upon the lives of Asian immigrants who have made America home. Yang is also one of the creators of Netflix’s acclaimed Emmy and Golden Globe-winning drama, ‘Master of None’.

Tigertail stars Lee Hong-chi, Tzi Ma, Christine Ko, Hayden Szeto, Yo-Hsing Fang, Kunjue Li, Fiona Fu, James Saito and Joan Chen in pivotal roles.

Tigertail premieres on Netflix on 10th April. Have a look at the trailer here –
