The trailer for Alt Balaji and ZEE5’s keenly anticipated series ‘It Happened In Calcutta‘ is out, and in one stroke, it has captured our imaginations with its vividly-shot sequences of passionate love, angsty heartbreak and enthralling milieu. Juxtaposed against the vibrant city of Calcutta of the sixties, the series is rendered in richly-textured hues that lend a certain old-world charm to the narrative.
The trailer must be judged on the basis of the clear demarcation that exists between its first and second halves. The first half portrays a Calcutta that loves and lives the good life – read, clubbing, partying, sleeping around – the quintessential hippie culture of which sixties Calcutta was the hub. It is in such carefree times that the sweet and innocent Kusum (Naghma Rizwan) crosses paths and falls in love with the resident stud of Calcutta Medical College, Ronobir (Karan Kundrra).
The second half undergoes a sea change in terms of emotions and situations. There’s a certain sense of urgency in the relationship between Ronobir and Kusum, even though she hates him with all her heart and refuses to fall for his charms again.
The narrative here is steeped in gravitas – war and cholera perform a macabre dance of death and suffering, and both Ronobir and Kusum are caught in its hold. Karan Kundrra looks magnificent as the suave and sophisticated Ronobir. He looks perfectly like the heartthrob he is, for scores of young girls. Naghma Rizwan is a great find – she simply lights up the screen with her luminescent beauty and endearing naivete.
The trailer of It Happened In Calcutta is engaging and enthralling in parts, and certainly makes one want to watch the show at the earliest, especially for fans of Karan Kundrra.
It Happened In Calcutta premieres on Alt Balaji and ZEE5 on 29th February.
