Special Ops, the next offering from Hotstar Specials, is one of the most eagerly awaited shows of recent times, and for very good reason. For one, it marks ace director Neeraj Pandey’s entry into the web space. He’s the guy who’s given Indian cinema edge-of-the-seat thrillers such as A Wednesday, Special 26, Baby, Naam Shabana, and a thoughtfully-made biopic in M S Dhoni.
So it’s quite obvious that good content-starved netizens are waiting to lap up his first web offering. Hotstar has just dropped the first trailer for Neeraj Pandey’s Special Ops, and it is, in one word, explosive.
The superb ensemble cast comprises Kay Kay Menon, Divya Dutta, Vipul Gupta, Meher Vij, Saiyami Kher, Vinay Pathak, Muzamil Ibrahim, Sajjad Delafrooz and Sana Khan, along with Karan Tacker, making his return to acting after a long sabbatical.
Special Ops is another narrative that falls into the same category as Neeraj Pandey’s other thrillers. The treatment definitely reminds one of Baby and A Wednesday. The trailer picks up the narrative from the terrorist attack on Parliament House, Delhi in 2001, to present times, nineteen years later.
In between, the country has had to witness numerous more attacks on its security fibre. Kay Kay Menon is the man of the moment – a RAW agent who has been on the trail of the perpetrators of the 2001 attack, from then to now. He is a man obsessed, and will not rest until he, and his team, has managed to capture the elusive mastermind of the most horrifying terrorist attacks on India and its citizens.
Hence the tagline of Special Ops, which states – “The story of India’s longest manhunt”. The narrative traverses through 19 countries, as five agents use all the resources at their disposal to hunt the dreaded terrorist down.
The trailer is fast-paced and action-packed, leaving one rubbing one’s eyes in disbelief at the lightning speed at which the montage of shots appear and disappear on screen. We catch glimpses of the act actors – Divya Dutta gearing up in the garb of a suicide bomber; Meher Vij grappling with hardened terrorists – much like Taapsee Pannu in Baby; Vinay Pathak leading from the front, Karan Tacker looking dashing and determined; and of course, Kay Kay Menon, lending his formidable talent to the proceedings.
The visuals are breathtaking, the production values — from what one could glean from the two and a half minute trailer — top-notch. The series is produced by Friday Storytellers, the digital arm of Neeraj Pandey and partner Shital Bhatia’s film production company, Friday Filmworks.
The trailer of Special Ops gives one all the feels of power-packed thriller, and we can’t wait for it to start streaming.
Special Ops premieres on Hotstar on 17th March 2020.
