The first trailer – teaser for Netflix’s upcoming comedy series Space Force is out, and from the looks of it, the series has distinct ‘The Office’ vibes. Not least because of the presence of Steve Carell, who played Michael Scott in The Office, and because Space Force is a creation of Greg Daniels, also the creator of The Office.
The trailer starts off with decorated ‘four-star’ Major Mark, looking gobsmacked with being selected to head the newly created Space Force – the sixth branch of the US Armed Forces. Major Mark, who always had dreams of leading the American Air Force, is not too convinced about leading the Space Force, but gives in.
The trailer cuts to the Space Force base at a remote location in Colorado, where Major Mark meets his team – a colourful and eccentric bunch of space scientists. At different times in the trailer, different members of the team ridicule the President’s plan – the Space Force was a real-life creation of U.S. President Trump, and the series picked up the idea for its narrative from Trump’s speech and the subsequent creation of the Space Force.
Taking the above into consideration, it is always going to be a difficult job motivating the team to get going and amp up America’s space dominance as well as put a man on the moon again. A few scenes show the shenanigans of Mark and team, as their experiments end in abject failures – a trial rocket launch results in the rocket blowing up. Watching from the sidelines, he asks his junior what the rocket was worth, and gets the answer – ‘four new middle schools’ worth.
The trailer ends with a low on confidence Major Mark self-boosting his spirits with a rendition of The Beach Boys ‘Kokomo’. We also see snatches of Lisa Kudrow as Mark’s wife Maggie. The cast comprises some of the most talented actors and comedians in entertainment today, including John Malkovich, Diana Silvers, Tawny Newsome, Ben Schwartz, Jimmy O. Yang, Noah Emmerich, Alex Sparrow, and Don Lake.
Space Force starts streaming on Netflix on May 29th.
