According to the current Netflix India Top 10 movies ranking, Telugu romantic action thriller ‘Thandel’ and young adult Hindi romance drama ‘Nadaaniyan’, are trending at Number 1 and 2 respectively in India.
On the other hand these are the very films that are getting brutally trolled online on social media. So have trend and troll become the newest dancing partners for OTT content?
First of all we need to understand that more the number of views for a title the more are the chances of it to trend on the platform. Whether you end up liking or hating it is an altogether different matter.
So yes, even if you want to have a peek to see what’s wrong with a film and why is everyone talking horrible things about it, you add up to the views eventually.
And it’s after all the viewing that the trolling begins. Social media gets abuzz with negative reviews and all that’s bad about the content. People even criticise platforms like Netflix for wasting their money on such worthless films.
These films fail on OTT for various reasons. Maybe the hype created before release doesn’t match the reality, maybe the makers made certain questionable choices in casting, storyline and more, or maybe the content just didn’t hit the right spot and was so poorly executed that nothing could stop it from becoming meme fodder.
In reality though, Netflix and other platforms like Prime Video, Jio Hotstar, SonyLIV, Zee5 and more, don’t care much about the content’s quality until it’s getting good engagement on their platform. Moreover, when these OTT platforms see something is piquing viewer interest they boost it up on the app resulting in more and more clicks and taps. It’s just the normal algorithm on which OTT platforms work.
So yes, whether a title is getting trolled or receiving great reviews it doesn’t matter, if it’s getting views it is a good one for the OTT platform and it will trend. It’s time we stop questioning how it got there or blame the platform and choose better for ourselves.
