‘Tribhuvan Mishra: CA Topper’: Potential Lost To Messy Narration

As has been depicted in a plethora of mainstream films and shows, family men often have to make difficult choices for the sake of their families. Even when these choices must be made at great personal discomfort.

A recently released 9-episode Netflix series follows the same lines. ‘Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper’ portrays Manav Kaul as the titular Tribhuvan Mishra, a topper of the Chartered Accountant’s Final Exam, who is forced to become a sex worker after his government job ends up accumulating him loads of debt.

While the show tries to adopt a light-hearted and comedic narrative for Tribhuvan’s chaotic dual life as he juggles familial relationships and dangerous gangsters, the plot becomes increasingly cobwebbed as additional elements are introduced at every twist and turn.

The reviews the show has garnered seem to be startlingly juxtaposing. While on the one hand, Kaul and his fellow cast members are being heralded for their strong performances, the overall execution is being labeled lackluster. The show is also being earmarked as an unfortunate case of ‘too many cooks have spoiled the broth’.

Tribhuvan’s misadventures unfold amidst unpleasantly bright sets. While this should have added to the hyper-real aesthetic appeal of the show, it has quite the opposite effect. It adds to the tackiness of the series, instead.
