The trailer for HBO’s much-awaited new series ‘True Detective: Night Country’ is out. The new season of the acclaimed crime drama and police procedural show True Detective premieres on HBO and Max in the US on 14th January, 2024; and on Jio Cinema in India on 15th January.
True Detective: Night Country is the fourth installment of the popular HBO series, but the first that’ll have two female protagonists leading the crime drama. Jodie Foster and Kali Reis star as detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro, tasked with solving the mysterious disappearance of eight men from the Tsalal Arctic Research Station in Ennis, Alaska.
The story is set in Alaska, in a place that sees darkness for 24 hours in a day for several weeks without a break; hence the title ‘Night Country’. How did the eight men disappear without a trace? Is it a supernatural element at work?
Besides Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, True Detective: Night Country stars Fiona Shaw, Christopher Eccleston, John Hawkes, among others, in crucial roles. Issa López is writer and director on the show. The previous three seasons of True Detective were written by Nic Pizzolatto.
With True Detective: Night Country, prestigious content behemoth HBO has addressed an extremely crucial criticism leveled against the franchise over the years since its inception – that of inclusivity and representation. The first three seasons of True Detective have been roundly criticised for their woefully inadequate representation of women on the show. From the primary cast to the crew of the series, it’s been an all-men show for the series since the beginning.
Of course, True Detective Season 3 tried to make some amends on the inclusivity front by picking a person of colour as lead of the series. For those who don’t know, Academy Award winning actor Mahershala Ali played lead detective Wayne Hays in True Detective Season 3.
The new, fourth season of True Detective, however, is a marked departure from the previous norms. For one, both leads on the show are female actors. Secondly, the writer-director of True Detective: Night Country is female too. In Jodie Foster, True Detective: Night Country has one of the OGs in the business. Foster’s turn as detective Clarice Starling in the 1991 film Silence Of The Lambs is still remembered as one of the most impactful portrayals of a detective on screen.
All of the above is ample reason for audiences to tune into True Detective: Night Country, when it premieres on Max and Jio Cinema in January. Stay tuned to Binged for more updates on the upcoming HBO series.
