Universal Acquires Lil Nas X Documentary For International Release

The era of documentaries is far from over as the studio that produced Oppenheimer now grabs the rights for another documentary, this time about a musician.

Lil Nas X’s documentary “Long Live Montero” will now be distributed by Universal, and that too internationally.

“Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero” is directed by Carlos López Estrada and Zac Manuel, following Lil Nas X on his groundbreaking world tour. Beyond concerts, it offers an intimate look into his life, including struggles with balancing artistic vision and family expectations.

Themes of identity, acceptance, and self-discovery are explored, resonating deeply with Lil Nas X’s music. The film promises to be a captivating portrayal of a young artist’s journey.

It will release on OTT platforms on May 20th and will add more credibility to the plethora of concert film waves. Though shot in a documentary format and not having as big of a fanbase as Swift or Beyonce, it wouldn’t have broken the box office massively, so an OTT release is definitely the correct choice by the makers.

The logline reads: “The diaristic film presents a remarkably intimate portrait of a musician navigating identity, family, expectations, and acceptance, all while reflecting on his place within the legacy of Black, queer performers.”

“Shot over the course of 60 days with unparalleled access, the film follows Montero Hill, aka Lil Nas X, on an emotional odyssey through the creation and performance of the critically acclaimed ‘Long Live Montero’ show.”

From popular songs such as “Old Town Road,” which broke the music charts, to hits like “Industry Baby,” X managed to crack the market. With this documentary, we will be able to know more about the man X than the musician X, which is definitely a necessary step for the musician.
