Ace filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj has gotten onboard the OTT bandwagon. The talented and maverick writer-director-music composer will make a spy thriller film for streaming giant Netflix. The thriller is titled ‘Khufiya’, and features a storyline inspired by true events.
‘Khufiya’ will be based on the espionage novel ‘Escape to Nowhere’, written by Amar Bhushan. Khufiya is a story about Krishna Mehra, a RAW agent, who is assigned to track down a mole in the organisation, who is betraying the country and selling India’s defence secrets. All along, she grapples with her dual identity of a spy and a lover. Tabu, Ali Fazal, Wamiqa Gabbi and Ashish Vidyarthi play primary characters in the thriller. Amar Bhushan retired as special secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat in 2005, and his book ‘Escape To Nowhere’ is a detailed and inside look at the workings of India’s premier intelligence agency.
Said Vishal Bhardwaj on making ‘Khufiya’, “With Khufiya, my attempt is to create an edgy espionage film that contrasts the slow burn of intelligence & surveillance work with one’s deep rooted emotional conflicts”. Khufiya will be directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, and also produced by him under his production banner, Vishal Bhardwaj Films. Rohan Narula has written the screenplay of Khufiya along with Vishal Bhardwaj.
Shared Tabu, “Khufiya is a one of a kind project, extremely close to my heart and I am excited to be a part of this gripping spy thriller. As always, it’s a delight working with VB (Vishal Bhardwaj) again, and feels like homecoming!” Tabu had earlier worked on Mira Nair’s ‘A Suitable Boy’ for Netflix.
