A trend is being observed for the past few years – famous daily soaps coming back with sequels on digital platforms. Pretty sure a few show names come to your mind but the one currently in news is ‘Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan‘ season 4!
It was the most famous show amongst youth during 2015. ‘Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan’ (KY2) became the fan favourite and the show’s lead Manik Malhotra (Parth Samthaan) and Nandini Murthy (Niti Taylor Bawa), popularly known as MaNan, became the next ‘couple goals’. All that India’s youth wanted was a story like Manik and Nandini.
First two seasons of the show aired on MTV. Due to popular demand, the makers had to bring this romantic drama back with season 3 in 2019 on Voot. And a few months ago, Niti and Parth took to their social media to announce yet another season! As soon as this news came out, fans were overjoyed! But the real question is – Will this previously successful show live upto its reputation?
Seeing the massive fan following of KY2, and the excitement that is going around for season 4, it can be assumed that this show will be well received. It can only be assumed, not assured. This is because a few popular daily soaps that returned on OTT did not perform well.
First will definitely be ‘Pavitra Rishta 2’. It didn’t entirely go down the drain, but was definitely far from its first season. The original ‘Pavitra Rishta’ aired from 2009-2014 and became one of the highest watched Indian daily soaps of all time. This show is what put Ankita Lokhande and late Sushant Singh Rajput on the map. The new season that aired on Zee5 and Alt Balaji didn’t get the desired love from their fans. The reviews say it was incomplete, lacked emotional quotient, and didn’t show a good chemistry between the show’s lead actors – Ankita Lokhande and Shaheer Sheikh. The success of this show was also hampered because fans could not see their favourite actor Sushant on the screen again.
On the other hand, ‘Qubool Hai 2.0’ received reviews that were poles apart! The first season was a hit and a turning point in Surbhi Jyoti’s career, who played the character of Zoya. Karan Singh Grover, who played Asad, again became the heartthrob. Since the first season garnered a positive response, the makers thought it was best to come up with a brand new season after 5 long years. It started streaming on Zee5 from the 12th of March, 2021 with 10 episodes. Audience totally admired Zoya and Asad’s chemistry and each character’s acting. Other than this, the show was called a treat to the eyes. Set majorly in Serbia, the scenery was breathtaking. One half of the audience praised the new season for these two reasons and called it a must watch, a perfect blend of action & romance, and the best web series in India. The other half felt completely opposite. They termed ‘Qubool Hai 2.0’ as slow and absolutely ridiculous with senseless storyline. Also, the mediocre performances by the cast added fuel to the fire. Oops!
Getting poles apart reviews no way makes the show a ‘success’. Similarly, getting average reviews does not mean ‘well received’. More such shows are ‘Jamai 2.0’ (sequel of Jamai Raja) and ‘Sarabhai VS Sarabhai 2’. Let’s not get into the details for these two because you’ve definitely understood the crux of this discussion.
Again, will ‘Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan’ season 4 live upto its reputation? Will it go down like other digital sequels? We’ll have to wait and watch! MaNan return exclusively on Voot. The release date is yet to be revealed. Are you excited or are you excited to witness romance and friendship again?
