Warner Bros. Actively Working On DC’s Lanterns

DC’s rebirth is ongoing, and Green Lantern has to play a major role in that. In the past, it was one film that left a miserable taste. The 2011 film Green Lantern has a 5.5 on IMDb and 25% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Now, there is some positive news about the upcoming series.

Lanterns were previously speculated to get a series in the new DC slate, and now it is confirmed. Though it won’t come under the Max Original label, it will carry the HBO tag, possibly boosting viewership.

As HBO dives deep with the DC series, it is now officially in the works. According to updates, the season will have eight episodes.

The series follows Green Lantern Corps members Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. Stewart, a new recruit and one of DC’s first Black superheroes, joins the legendary Jordan, a test pilot in the comics.

Nathan Fillion will portray another Green Lantern, Guy Gardner, in James Gunn’s Superman movie, premiering in July 2025. The Corps, an intergalactic police force, uses power rings to combat evil across the cosmos.

“We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof as they partner with Tom for this fresh take on DC’s Green Lantern. As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live-action series will mark an exciting new era,” said Casey Bloys, chairman/CEO of HBO and Max Content.

In January 2023, Gunn and Safran announced a Green Lantern series, describing it as a major HBO event similar to True Detective.

This series replaces a previous Berlanti Productions project. The first DC series, Creature Commandos, will debut in late 2024, followed by Peacemaker Season 2.

Gunn and Safran expressed excitement about bringing Lanterns to HBO, highlighting Hal Jordan and John Stewart’s compelling characters in a detective story integral to the new DCU launching with Superman next summer.
