According to The Wall Street Journey, Warner Bros Discovery is no longer planning to merge Discovery+ and HBO Max. Instead, the former streaming service may function as a stand-alone platform.
The decision comes amid the company planning to launch a new and mega-sized streaming service to stand apart from the increasing competition in the streaming world.
The company wanted to deliver a single platform to viewers due to the streaming market becoming overcrowded in the last few years. Subscribers may not get a merged streaming platform. Instead, the new service will treasure all of HBO Max’s content and the majority of the Discovery+ content. Amidst this scenario, Discovery+ will serve as a stand-alone streaming service.
Discovery+ currently has more than 20 million subscribers. And it cannot afford to lose them as the viewers may unsubscribe from the service to save themselves from the higher prices. Additionally, the current economic environment has made things worse for WBD.
The subscription charges for Discovery+ range between $4.99-6.99 per month in the US. And HBO Max charges $9.99-15.99 per month from American viewers. In India, the monthly plan of Discovery+ can be purchased for Rs. 199. As for its annual plan, viewers have to spend Rs. 399 only. Furthermore, Warner Bros Discovery is planning to launch a free streaming service (ad-supported) to get an edge over its competitors. Stay tuned for more updates.
