Dr Shivprakash Mehta, Consultant ENT, Apollo Spectra Hospital Pune, says binge-watching for prolonged period can lead to hearing problems in future. “Continuous using head phone or earphones with loud noise can damage hair cells and nerves causing hearing loss. These harmful effects persists even after the exposure of noise has stopped and is usually permanent. Generally people don’t realise they have a problem until it is too late. Noise induced hearing loss (due to earphones) is 100 percent preventable. It should be used in moderation. Ear phones should not be used for more than 60 minutes at a time and at no more than 60 percent of the maximum volume. Binge watching may lead to continuous exposure to loud sounds and result in hearing problems,” the doctor said while talking to to a media channel.
If this has left you puzzled and worried, we’re sorry, there’s more than just decrease in ability to hear – harmful effects on the eyes! Strain on your eyes due to extended hours can lead to irritation in the eyes, sensitivity to light and partial loss of sight in near future. Also, sleep deprivation is another major issue with binge watchers. The doctor further suggested that there is no harm in binge-watching but it is extremely important to know when to stop. Everything beyond a certain limit is hazardous. “There is no harm in watching a series but it is important to do it in moderation. Limit the number of episodes you watch at a stretch and decide in advance. You can choose to stop half way through an episode before the cliff hanger so you don’t feel compelled to keep going,” said Dr Shivprakash.
