So imagine a premise that revolves around a number of participants all picked up by an organization, and they get to participate in a few games that carry a huge cash prize. However, if they lose, they die. Sounds familiar? Well, if you said squid games, then congratulations, but we are not talking about that. Rather, the answer is a Bollywood movie from 2009 titled LUCK. Starring Imran Khan, Sanjay Datt, Shruti Hassan, and Mithun Chakravarty.
Back in 2009, Sohum Shah was cooking up a movie, which, to his dismay, didn’t really work. However, fast forward to 2021, and a series is released in a dystopian Korea. Which pretty much can be summed up by the same intro we gave earlier. Following the success of Squid Games, a second season was announced, which is all set to premiere on December 26.
Now the writer and director of LUCK Sohum Shah is bent on taking matters into his own hands and has filed a lawsuit against the creators of Squid Games. Claiming that they ripped off the plot of his movie. The narrative does line up, and the fact that the writer of Squid Games has admitted that he wrote Squid Games in 2009, the same year Luck was released, just makes it all the more speculative.
Now if it’s true, then the fact that the Koreans made millions from a plot that was considered lukewarm in all aspects is quite hilarious. But then again, if the lawsuit prevails, Sohum Shah should get his cut, and the creative team of Squid Gaes will probably get sued too. As of now, the two properties do have certain differences, which does not mitigate the similarities even a little bit.
