Anurag Kashyap has always been known for his brave efforts in making films. Many of his films were banned by the censor board and some even faced legal issues. Almost all the films that he has made have some of their content reduced by the CBFC. Even after all these issues, Anurag never failed to provide good content and always exceeded the audience’s expectations.
One such film of his is Black Friday. The film faced several legal issues even before its release. This continued struggle led to the banning of the film and it could never be released publicly. After the emergence of OTT platforms though, the people got used to unfiltered content and the film was then released on Hotstar. The movie is available to watch even for free on Hotstar, and one can experience the cinematic brilliance of Anurag through it.
The film is based on the Mumbai serial bomb-blasts that happened during 1993. The event is recognised as the biggest terrorist attack on Indian soil. The film narrates the incident, events prior to the incidents, the situation that caused it and the aftermath of the event. The plot of the movie is non-linear with the bomb-blasts being the initiation which is followed by various events that precede and succeed the blasts. The story ends with the successful capture of the terrorists involved in the incident by the officer in charge (Kay Kay Menon).
The film’s most unique part is its authenticity. Anurag didn’t hesitate taking the names of the gangsters, politicians, terrorists who were involved in the attack, despite them being influential figures of the contemporary political scenario. The direction of Anurag as always is commendable. The scenes are directed with a visionary mindset which makes them worthy of watching. The film’s intensity and the use of dark lighting to increase the gravity of the scenes make it more engaging and captivating.
All in all, if you are a fan of Anurag Kashyap, you must watch this movie. If you are a fan of movies based on real events and movies based on cops and intelligence agencies, then too this movie is a must watch. Go and watch the movie without any delay as it is free to watch on Disney+ Hotstar.
