Utopia is a conspiracy thriller about the end of the world which was forshadowed in a comic book. A few comic book fans meet online and geek out over their obsession of the fictional comic book called ‘Utopia’. Becky, Ian, Samantha, Wilson Wilson and Grant (portrayed by Ashleigh LaThrop, Dan Byrd, Jessica Rothe, Desmin Borges and Javon “Wanna” Walton respectively) go through the comics and find threats to humanity predicted in the story.
What turned out to be a fun activity at first, takes a dark turn as the guys cross off threats like ebola and zika viruses which had already come and gone as predicted in the comics, making it too real to be fun. As they dig deeper they find out about the conspiracy of bio warfare and a man made disease that is gonna create the end of the world. It all comes to a boiling point, when the group meets the supposed ‘fictional main character’ from the comic book, Jessica Hyde (played by Sasha Lane).
The show also stars acting juggernauts of John Cusack (From 2012 and Being John Malkovich) and Rainn Wilson (From The Office), the later who plays a virologist who is trying to find a cure for a virus outbreak. The song ‘It’s The End Of The World As We Know It’ by R.E.M. plays in the background (which is both eerie and comical) of the trailer as the world seemingly descends into chaos.
The web series also co-stars Farrah Mackenzie, Christopher Denham and Cory Michael Smith. The series is a co-production between Endemol Shine North America, Kudos and Amazon, with showrunner Flynn executive producing alongside Jessica Rhoades (from Sharp Objects), Sharon Levy, Sharon Hall, Toby Haynes, Karen Wilson and Kelly.
Utopia premiers on Amazon Prime Video next month on Friday, 25th September.
