Auli’i Cravalho voiced Moana in the 2016 hit Disney animated film. And Johnson lent his voice to Maui, an energetic shape-shifting demigod. The film follows Moana as she finds herself on a voyage to save her dying island. With the help of her grandmother’s wisdom and a bit of luck, Moana finds Maui, the notorious demigod who stole the heart of Te Fiti, a female deity. As the film progresses, we see the protagonist on a journey of self-discovery where he establishes an unbreakable connection with the sea and emerges as a leader.
Moana received critical acclaim for its visuals. Critics particularly praised the attention to detail in presenting the ancient Polynesian landscapes, sea, and vital cultural elements. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s songs and Mark Mancina’s score also received critical praise.
