Johnny Depp is one of those rare actors in Hollywood who can portray any character. The man is prominent for his versatile acting skills, ability to play diverse roles, and charismatic on-screen presence. He has given mesmerising performances in films like Edward Scissorhands (1990), Ed Wood (1994), Donnie Brasco (1997), the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Sweeney Todd (2007), Black Mass (2015), and many more. The actor is also known for his numerous collaborations with legendary helmer Tim Burton. One of those collaborations is Alice in Wonderland (2010).
The film revolves around Alice Kingsleigh, who enters the fantastical world of the ‘Underland’. There, she encounters the White Rabbit, Talking Flowers, a Dodo, a Dormouse, and twins Tweedledum and Tweedledee. Sometime later, she also meets the eccentric Mad Hatter (played by Depp), who tells her how the Red Queen usurped Underland’s kingdom from her sister, the White Queen. Guided by her friends, Alice finds herself on a quest to end the Red Queen’s reign and restore balance to Underland, ultimately enabling her to embrace her confidence and strength.
One thing that truly stands out in ‘Alice in Wonderland’ is Underland’s highly imaginative and visually mesmerising world. Tim Burton’s unique artistic style certainly livens up the fantastical place. Critics widely praised the film’s colourful and intriguing set design and high-quality CGI work. They also singled out Depp’s and Mia Wasikowska’s performances, with particular praise directed towards the latter’s take on the iconic character, who looked more confident and empowered than in previous adaptations. Additionally, the film benefitted from the presence of other cast members, such as Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter, and voice performances from Alan Rickman, Michael Sheen, Stephen Fry, and more. Danny Elfman’s amazing score also makes the film worth watching.
The film grossed over $1 billion during its theatrical run and became the second highest-grossing movie of 2010, behind Toy Story 3.
