It revolves around a new Blade Runner named Officer K (Gosling), who uncovers a long-buried secret which is capable of wreaking havoc among people. K’s quest leads him to a retired Blade Runner, Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who has been missing for decades. In his pursuit, K deals with questions related to memory, identity, and the meaning of being a human. However, things change dramatically after some forces complicate his journey, who will stop at nothing to keep the truth buried.
The film’s biggest strengths are visual effects, cinematography, and acting performances. They get further uplifted by Hans Zimmer’s electric musical score. Additionally, the leading duo of Gosling and Ford do full justice to their respective characters. The former delivers a nuanced and complex take on his character. On the other hand, Ford’s addition adds some much-needed nostalgia and depth to the sequel.
Another thing that makes 2049 a masterpiece is its immersive setting of a dystopian future. The production designs look amazing as well. Furthermore, Villeneuve takes the proper time to build his characters and the world where the film’s story takes place, allowing the viewers to connect with the film.
