Written and directed by Mahesh Bhatt, ‘Saaransh‘ is a wonderful film that deals with the depths of human emotions and the abyss of sadness. The film stars Anupam Kher and Rohini Hattangadi in the lead roles and has Soni Razdan, Madan Jain and Nilu Phule in other important roles.
Saaransh tells the story of B.V Pradhan, a retired school teacher who was living happily with his wife. But all tables are turned when the only bread-earner of the family, the son of the couple, suddenly dies of a mugging incident in New York. Pradhan and his wife try to cope up with the shock and the sorrow of their son’s death. They lend one room of their house for money and a young girl comes to live with them. The girl is an aspiring actress and she is in love with a local politician’s son.
The cinematography is handled by Adeep Tandon and the editing of the film is done by David Dhawan. The music of the film is given by Ajit Varman and the lyrics are written by Vasant Dev. Saaransh has some wonderful songs. The film went on to win many awards and was also the submission for the Academy Awards for India that year.
With commendable performances from all the actors, you do not feel like this is actually the screen debut of Anupam Kher. Watch the film if you are a fan of the parallel cinema movement of Bollywood.
