Weekend Recommends: Black Comedies like ‘Monica O My..’ Part 2

Netflix’s desi dark comedy ‘Monica, O My Darling‘ starring Rajkumar Rao, Huma Qureshi, and Radhika Apte has been all the rage for the past two weeks. Lauded by critics and the general public alike, the movie has been referred to by many as a love letter from director Vasan Bala to Hindi cinema. The love for the genre rejuvenated, here are our recommendations for this weekend:

Judgementall Hai Kya(2019)- ZEE5
The Kangana Ranaut-Rajkumar Rao starrer may be one of the most aesthetically pleasing dark comedies a lot of people are yet to wake up to. With Ranaut playing the protagonist Bobby- a wealthy woman with mental disorders staying alone in Mumbai- the movie is a quirky thriller written by Kanika Dhillon of ‘Haseen Dillruba’ fame. Directed by Prakash Kovelamudi, the movie has Rajkumar Rao playing a very interesting role of a murder suspect opposite Ranaut. While the two actor’s last outing together was in the coming-of-age cult classic ‘Queen’, even in a new genre the stars did not disappoint.

Andhadhun(2018)- Netflix
While Sriram Raghavan’s Andhadhun starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Tabu, and Radhika Apte is now a cult classic, and if you are someone who has not seen the film by now, you should right now. ASAP. And we’re not even kidding about how good the movie is. No trailer, no songs, just straight-up watch it, and then thank us later. The movie, with a very modest budget, went on to make reportedly over 450+ crs upon its release, with a huge portion from China. The movie follows Ayushmann’s protagonist who is a blind pianist and a crime he must report that he should technically know nothing about. With the writing of the film and the ever-dependable Tabu being the magic of the film, you should go to watch this one as a clean slate.

Ludo(2020)- Netflix
Ludo is the return that everyone hoped for and wanted from a director of Anurag Basu’s stature. Starring an ensemble cast including the likes of Abhishek Bachchan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Rajkummar Rao, Sanya Malhotra, Pearle Maaney, Pankaj Tripathi, and Fatima Sana Shaikh, the movie is one of those rare instances where a film and a script gives all its stars due space to perform. A well-written movie that joins four individual stories together with seamless ease, the movie is an innovative movie that deserves praise for its fresh premise. With the script of Ludo 2 already completed as per reports, you can’t afford to miss this hilarious movie from the ‘Jagga Jasoos’ director.
