What ‘Amaran’s Raging Success Means For Biopics?

Human lives are sometimes lived so extraordinarily that they deserve to be documented, time and time again. When this documentation takes on the form of biographical and semi-biographical films, these extraordinary stories reach an unimaginably wide array of audiences.

Such is being observed with the case of ‘Amaran’, a recently released Tamil-language biographical action war film revolving around the life and death of Major Mukund Varadarajan, a commissioned officer in the Indian Army`s Rajput Regiment. He was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra for his valor during a counterterrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir.

The film also doubles as the story of his wife’s seldom talked about strength and loyalty to her husband’s memory. Not only has the film grossed INR 200 Crore at the international box-office, but has also left viewers tear-bound. For all of the success that ‘Amaran’ has garnered, and will amass in the upcoming future, it is the newest addition to the list of recent biographies that have appealed to the audience.

However, ‘Amaran’ has seemingly become both, an audience as well as box-office blockbuster. While other biopics of the year like ‘Srikanth’, ‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar’, ‘Chandu Champion’, and more debuted to positive acclaim and even managed to perform well at the box-office, ‘Amaran’, has set itself apart.

Which is to say, its glaring success is testament to the fact that the audience will never get too bored of a biopic, as long as it manages to appeal to them!
