From the past week or so, Twitter has been flooded with speculations regarding Dune 3 or Dune Messiah, but director Denis Villeneuve managed to address the rumors once and for all. For fans, the response is somewhat mixed, at least on the surface level.
Denis Villeneuve stated that he will only consider making Dune Messiah if he can make it better than the existing Dune Part Two.
Now, regarding the success of the second part of the franchise, it has grossed over $500 million and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Just like the first part, Dune Part Two is also experiencing major success in the international box office.
“I did both movies back-to-back, which makes absolute sense for me. I felt that it was a good idea to move forward right after ‘Part One.’ We were already designing, writing, etc. But it also meant that for six years I was on Arrakis non-stop, and I think it will be healthy to step back a little bit.”
“First, make sure that we have a strong screenplay. The thing I want to avoid is not having something ready. I never did it, and now I feel it could be dangerous because of the enthusiasm. We need to make sure all the ideas are on paper.”
Denis Villeneuve then emphasizes the importance of authenticity and relevance in continuing the “Dune” saga, suggesting that a potential “Dune Messiah” adaptation must surpass the previous installments in quality.
Now, what’s the chance of us getting Dune Messiah?
In terms of the box office, the franchise has been a success, practically ensuring that Dune Part Three might happen. However, the timeframe might be unknown as Villeneuve might invest his mind in some other project.
Also, to build up hype, the fans also need some time to really think and speculate about the future. So, the wait now begins. We don’t really have a window as of now, but the stars are ready for a third part, and as soon as it gets a green light from the studio and director, the car will race on.
